WHAT IS BREATHWORK?
Breathwork is an active, engaging form of meditation utilizing our own breath in certain patterns to change the state of our nervous system - calming down, energizing, focusing, clarifying, clearing old habits and stuck energy from stress, conditioning and more.
It helps heal the nervous system by restoring dynamic range - improving sleep, digestion, our connection to self and others.
IS BREATHWORK RIGHT FOR ME?
In short - Yes! We are all breathing all the time, of course - the only question is if we are breathing in a healthful, supportive way or if we are creating chronic low level panic through disregulated patterns.
With 1 on 1 guidance the practice is tailored specifically to you and your needs, whether that be calming anxiety, releasing patterns from past anxiety or conditioning, or finding clarity and landing in heart centered authenticity.
WHAT STYLE(S) DO YOU GUIDE?
Breathwork comes in many forms. Most people come to me for Somatic Breathwork (which is similar in lineage to styles including Holotropic, Dynamic, Rebirthing, Conscious Connected Breathing, Shamanic Breathwork, Rewilding and others.) It can be an intensive energy clearing, heart opening, consciousness raising process.
I also guide Breathing for Calm - more traditional pranayama (yoga breathing) - supporting simple, calming breathing mechanics. This is gentle and accessible, appropriate for everyone and helps relieve anxiety - grounding, centering, improving overall metabolic health and even athletic performance.
ALL breathwork, when tailored to you, improves focus, clarity, sleep, digestion and overall nervous system health - restoring dynamic range and stress resilience.
ZOOM vs IN PERSON
This cannot be said for every modality: Breathwork translates perfectly over ZOOM.
Some clients prefer the comfort of their own space and the ability to do regular, ongoing nervous system "tune-ups" without having to leave home.
Others thrive off the in person energy. Most do both - in person when they have the time, ZOOM to maintain regular practice amidst the busy-ness of life.
1 on 1 vs GROUPS
Similar to Zoom vs In person, this is personal preference. Some people thrive off the energy of the group and feel more liberated, while others feel more self conscious in a group and are able to let go and ground more in the 1 on 1 context.
This is why I offer all options. The best way to figure it out is to ask more questions if you have them, then go off your instinctual feeling and go from there - knowing that every experience is supported and welcoming.
CAN BREATHWORK HELP MY ART, ACTING, EXPRESSION AND CREATIVITY?
Absolutely! In fact the way I first discovered Somatic Breathwork was in preparation for making my Broadway debut and it changed everything for me...
Somatic Breathwork in particular helps to clear and open channels of energy by releasing emotional resistance and bodily tension, freeing us up to new levels of heart centered self expression, creativity and authenticity.
IS BREATHWORK SAFE FOR ME?
Short answer - Yes! Most breathwork is absolutely safe for everyone. More intensive breathwork (ie - Somatic Breathwork) has certain contraindications (pregnant, serious cardiac history, epilepsy, recent surgery.) Reach out any time with specific questions.
1 on 1 sessions are always tailored to you directly as an individual and group sessions are never pushed - the work is always in service and support of YOU - your agency and autonomy - and your specific needs and interest.
In terms of emotional safety - my work is trauma informed and based in the roots of Dr. Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing work, among others.
WHY IS BREATHWORK BECOMING SO POPULAR?
Because it is so simple and so effective. Breathwork is in fact one of the most ancient mindfulness practices - Energy clearing breathwork sessions are an ancient shamanic practice of indigenous cultures the world over. Yoga breathing/Pranayama ("life force regulation" or "breath control" in sanskrit) is the original yoga practice ("union of mind, body, spirit") and predates yoga as we know it (asana/stretching poses) by many hundreds of years.
Breathwork is simple, effective, accessible, immensely profound and powerful for health and wellbeing - whether practiced gently, intensively or anything in between.
Is this safe?
Yes. While breathwork can be emotionally and physically activating, my sessions are trauma-informed and tailored to you. You are always in control of your breath and your experience.
Certain medical conditions require modifications - which we discuss clearly beforehand.
How is this different than meditation?
Meditation helps you observe your thoughts. Breathwork helps you release and repattern what’s driving them. It doesn't require "focus" or "concentration" - just breath.
This is active, dynamic nervous system work.
What if I’m skeptical?
You don’t need to believe in breathwork, or anything else - You just need to breathe and notice what happens.
This work is physiological, not ideological.
Who is this NOT for?
This may not be a fit if:
• You’re looking for purely passive relaxation
• You want someone else to "fix" you
• You’re unwilling to feel discomfort as part of growth
This process requires participation and a willingness to show up for yourself.
